Oh and a film that every self-respecting person should see...

Letting myself fall behind again - no excuse really, too cold and snow covered outside!

Friday night Pork & Beans was swinging... lots of stuff played, nice to hear more Rhythm & Soul and late 60's stuff being played as opposed to the usual trudging R&B.... Its something to warm the winter spirit!

Will get up a few pictures if any turn up, but in the mean time here are a few spins from our Guest DJ Adam Torel:

The Celebrities - I Choose You
Bob & Fred - I'll Be On My Way
The Sensations - Demanding Man
The Herbs - There Must Be An Answer
Bobby Patterson - If You Took A Survey

We should be back in January so watch this space... Should probably post up some Winter clobber at some point...

Picked up this recently (Thanks to my friend Tommaso) and it f feels a bit like a winter tune, but its just amazing midtempo!

All sorted for the 17th of December, should be a busy one - and even better now we have a crystal clear sound-system!

Joining me and Jamie Parr this month will be Adam Torel, playing at great mix of uptempo 6t's soul, can't wait!

A few tunes you can expect from me:

The Chosen Few - "Birth Of A Playboy" (Maple)
Margie Hendrix - "I Call You A Lover" (Mercury)
Rosco Gordon - "You Got My Bait" (Somada)
Eddie Bo - "Our Love (Will Never Falter)" (Blue Jay)
The Vanguards - "The Thought Of Losing Your Love" (Lamp)

Should be a good'un!

All-nighter feet.

Recovering on a Sunday evening from two nights which were amazing musically - Soul or Nothing and Radcliffe all-nighter.

Serious records played both nights and Karl Heard in the Soul or Nothing room at Radcliffe blew me away again - the most under-rated DJ ever?

Highlights for me were 'Twinkle Little Star' by the Parisians, 'Ruby' by Lee Brackett, 'Lost in the Crowd' by Billy Byrd and 'Stop & Think' by Tommy Bush (great great cheapie!). But there were too many good tunes to remember even a fraction of the names.

Just got a copy of this as well, so very happy!

I'm back!

Right! Sort of lost interest in the whole blogging jazz, but thought I would give it another go - with some more self-congratulatory bollocks... now from up in the dirty North!

So whats new on the clubbing/music/fashion side of things...

December:

Pork & Beans on the 17th!

Boom Shaka Lacka from the Italians and the Frenchman on the 22nd:

Also bashed out a flier for a mates night in December, should be good (maybe I should think about going into graphic design?!):

And this mayhem for February (cannot wait!):

Check it out on a (very recommended) website of my mates for more info as well:

Also been putting together some finishing touches on a new compilation CD, but my laptop decided to pack in and delete all my music, but it will be finished soon!

Been buying lots of music & watching lots of films (hours of Blaxploitation!) & a few nice pieces of clobber, more details to follow shortly...

Whats new?

A few things actually...

As you can see from the last post I have just finished sorting out the Dj's and the flier for the next Pork & Beans which should be good (judging from the last one):

Also just booked my tickets to see Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings at KoKo on the 14th of April so well chuffed with that, fucking love her!

Next week is sure to be a good one as well, on the Thursday the launch party for the exhibition I was lucky enough to be asked to participate in, "The New Faces" takes place. And no this is not obvious self-promotion! But yeah should be good, great Dj's playing, hopefully free booze and staring at a blown up picture of myself... Anyway check out the facebook group for details...

On the Friday its Boom Shaka Lacka (always good):

And on the Saturday, Me and her Highness Kels are spinning tunes at Shake! at the Boogaloo in Highgate:

Eh nice!

Early warning...

Imelda...

I meant to write this up here along time ago but have been to tired or drunk after work to be bothered to do so. Anyway on the 27th of Jan I hobbled down to the 100 club to see Imelda May. Usually I am not the biggest fan of Rockabilly, but she is really something special! Big Boy Bloater warmed everyone up by playing some ace R&B and Blues covers, including getting everyone messily singing along to "Mojo Working" and then Imelda took the stage, going through all of her big tunes like "Love Tattoo" and "Big Bad Handsome Man". The best showcase for her voice was slower tunes suck as "Knock 123", which is much more of a soul ballad - top stuff! Unfortunately she didn't do her version of "Voodoo Working" but I enjoyed every tune, plus she is fucking stunning!

That is two artists on my list crossed off, now just gotta see Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings (just announced a European tour?) and the Five Aces. Sweet!

And now for something mildly amusing, me on a fashion blog, ho ho ho:

Writing all of this while listening to the best:

February Pork & Beans

I have finally (weekend off!) got round to sorting out the next Pork & Beans club night after a long absence, so roll on February!

Fliers sorted, now just need to ensnare some guest DJ's...

This Friday...

I shall be spinning a few tunes at Zoo Zoo in Camden at The Blues Kitchen with (the infamous) Niamh Lynch!

Expect to hear R&B, 60's soul and maybe some jazzy/latin stuff...

Bands should be interesting as well, so roll on Friday!

Last Night...

I went to see Eli "Paperboy" Reed at the 100 Club and it sure was good. The band were really tight and looked sharp as did the man himself. Great to see a modern artist with such an authentic sound and a seriously good voice - basically if you haven't already seen him, do!

Never been to the 100 Club before either (when I really should have), nice to be standing right in front of the artist you are watching...

My only gripe is that his set was so short and he played "The Satisfier" as his second tune - which in my opinion his best (so not that bad then!):

Looking forward to seeing Imelda May there in a few weeks alot now!

What Am I Listening To?

The answer is Smart Phil's latest and very tasty compilation "Jazzers Only". So many good tunes on there - will just pick out my favourites...

Track 3 is Chico Hamilton's "For Mods Only" may have a cheesy title but is a nice jerking Hammond heavy dancer, more moody is Track 7, Sonny Cox's "Chocolate Candy" - beautiful tune with a slightly later sound. Next up is "Pigmy" by The Delegates another great creeping track. Some nutty xylophone madness (how often are you allowed to write that?) with Lionel Hampton on Track 11 with "Hamp Stamps". Nice as well is "One Naughty Flat" by Mac Rebennack & The Soul Orchestra and Billy Preston's "Greazee" - more on R&Bish side of things. Slightly more unusual is "Liberation" by The Afro-Blues Quintet, which may sound a tiny bit like elavator music at some points, but I think its a great dancer! Last but not least is a really nice instrumental version of "Comin' Home Baby" by Kai Winding.

I also missed out lots of great tunes so try and get your hands on a copy if you can - thanks Phil!

Staying in a similar jazzy vein how good is tune (Freddie Hubbard - Return Of the Prodigal Son):

Missed a copy on eBay a few weeks back - gutted!

Picked up this classic tune as well a few months back on UK Riverside:

Also if you haven't heard of him yet and you like your hammondy/latiny jazzy stuffs check out (the Finnish) Timo Lassey:

The tune "The More I Look At You" with Jose James (also worth looking up) is ace and was pressed up onto 7" - nice!

This weekends antics

Will be down at Shake! this Saturday at the Boogaloo in Highgate for I think the 6th consecutive month to catch up with friends and to hear the usual tasty mix of sounds. Always good to go to a night where the crowd (mostly) have no idea what they are listening too - but love it and are willing to dance all night!

Check it out

Erm, how do I go about doing this... I greatly enjoy trawling through other people's clothes/music blogs all over the internet, so figured I would try my hand at it. It will either be really knobby or perhaps mildly interesting, only time will tell.

Anyway to kick things off thought I would post up a few pictures of a few shirts I just had made up, just because I love check shirts (beware they need ironing!)
